Presentation letter A.I.R. (Associazione Italiana Rett) and RSE (Rett Syndrome Europe) are the organizers of the 1st European Congress on Rett Syndrome, with an overview from research to treatment, focusing on new perspectives about this topic. We will dedicate the first day to doctors and researchers employed on Rett Syndrome; starting with an historical overview and developing genetic inputs towards diagnosis and research of correlations between known genotypes and phenotypes; at 6 p.m. parents will have the chance of getting direct answers to their questions by specialists, after a summary of the topics treated during the whole day. Geneticists will propose a research update about peculiar complexity of this ailment, including the modern involvement of three different genes, with numerous modalities. With clinicians, we will examine how, while the clinic symptom nucleus shows a constant and specific trend, the expressivity and the gravity of patterns can change relevantly, from an important congenital and global compromising situation to an initial proper development followed by a mental and motor regression, motor troubles in highly invalidating situations, absence of any communication to preserve the language, complete absence of social signs and pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Reported news speak of the difficult connection between genetic comparison and clinical manifestations, evolution and prognosis, advancement of animal experimentation, new meaningful therapeutic hopes. Basic sciences and translational researches contribute to the progress of knowledge in this difficult context, with an open challenge in the next future. The 2nd day is focused on decidedly improving the taking up of our “little girls with beautiful eyes”. We privileged the ambits where dedicated professionals, basing on their experience and their specific researches, communicate the epilepsy art status, pharmacological treatments, management of behaviour troubles, modern contribution of increasing communication, management of nutritional troubles, of osteoporosis and scoliosis. Numerous skilled Centres matured knowledge including, and sometimes anticipating, a lot of problems that can appear in the future and result determinant for the evolution of single conditions. Their work is very important for all children and families involved and promote a different operative way, with another challenge to the future. At 6 p.m. we will have a synthesis of works and experts will be available to answer to parents questions directly. The 3rd day will be split in more parts. The first part, setting the Rett Syndrome in rare diseases, will focus all that today Europe and Italy are organizing to improve sanitary practices in Rare Diseases context. Spokesmen are professionals with high responsibility in this area. They present interesting information about basic principles and about actions in progress for the development of researches and charitable modalities to all affections, that due to their low incidence, need peculiar actions in Countries and World Health Organization. Then, some members of the European Scientific Committee will present interesting innovative proposals, focusing on the construction of a European Database and reinforcement of European Scientific Co-ordination. Reserving a specific place to RSE planning will constitute a constructive conclusion for the Congress. After that, AIR meeting will take place for the increase of donations and re-programming of pertaining activities. The Congress is for us an important chance for encountering and programming charitable researches and for the progress of operative modalities, projected towards a modern taking up, effective and focused on the future of our little girls. Lettera di presentazione L’A.I.R. Associazione Italiana Rett e la RSE Rett Syndrome Europe organizzano il I Congresso Europeo sulla Sindrome di Rett, in un’ampia visione che si estende dalla ricerca al trattamento, con focus sulle nuove prospettive in questo ambito. La prima giornata è dedicata ai medici e ricercatori che lavorano sulla sindrome di Rett; si apre con una overview storica e sviluppa successivamente i contributi della genetica alla diagnosi e studi sulle correlazioni tra i genotipi e fenotipi ad oggi noti; alle 18 è previsto uno spazio per i genitori, in cui, dopo una sintesi dei lavori, gli esperti sono a disposizione per dare risposte dirette alle loro domande. I genetisti propongono un update della ricerca sulla peculiare complessità di questa affezione, che include il coinvolgimento ad oggi di tre differenti geni, con molteplici modalità. Unitamente ai clinici, esaminano come, mentre il nucleo della sintomatologia clinica risulta costante e specifico, il pattern di espressività e di gravità possa variare sensibilmente, da una rilevante compromissione congenita e globale ad un iniziale sviluppo adeguato con successiva regressione psichica e motoria, da disturbi motori moderati a situazioni altamente invalidanti, da assenza di ogni comunicazione a preservazione del linguaggio, da totale assenza di manifestazioni comiziali ad epilessie farmacoresistenti. Riferiscono le novità sul difficile rapporto tra riscontri genetici e manifestazioni cliniche, evoluzione e prognosi, e sullo stato di avanzamento delle sperimentazioni sugli animali, che hanno aperto a significative speranze terapeutiche. Scienze di base e ricerche translazionali concorrono infatti all’avanzamento delle conoscenze in questo complesso contesto, in una sfida aperta nel prossimo futuro. La seconda giornata ha lo scopo di migliorare decisamente la presa in carico delle nostre “bambine dagli occhi belli”. Sono stati privilegiati pertanto quegli ambiti in cui alcuni professionisti dedicati, sulla base della loro esperienza e delle loro ricerche a ricaduta assistenziale, ci comunicano lo stato dell’arte sull’epilessia, sui trattamenti farmacologici, sulla presa in carico dei disturbi del comportamento, sull’apporto attuale della comunicazione aumentativa, sulla gestione dei disturbi nutrizionali, dell’osteoporosi e delle scoliosi. Vari Centri esperti infatti hanno maturato conoscenze tali da contenere e talora anche da prevenire molte delle complicanze che con l’età possono comparire e risultare determinanti nell’evoluzione delle singole condizioni. Il loro lavoro è di sostegno a tutti gli operatori e alle famiglie e promuove una differente attitudine operativa, in una ulteriore sfida verso il futuro. Come per la prima giornata alle 18 è riservato uno spazio per la sintesi dei lavori e gli esperti sono a disposizione per dare risposte dirette alle domande dei genitori. La terza giornata si apre in un’ottica di ampia visione. In una prima parte, che colloca la Sindrome di Rett nell’ambito delle Malattie Rare, viene focalizzato quanto ad oggi si sta organizzando in Europa ed in Italia per una migliore strutturazione delle pratiche sanitarie nel contesto delle Malattie Rare. Ne sono portavoce professionisti altamente impegnati e con elevate responsabilità in questo settore. Essi presentano interessanti informazioni sui principi di base e sulle azioni in corso per lo sviluppo tanto di ricerche quanto di modalità assistenziali rivolte a tutte le affezioni, che per la loro bassa incidenza, richiedono attenzioni peculiari degli Stati e dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Salute. Successivamente, alcuni membri del Comitato Scientifico Europeo presentano interessanti proposte innovative, mirate prevalentemente alla costituzione di un Database europeo ed al rafforzamento del Coordinamento scientifico europeo. Riservare uno spazio specifico alla progettazione della RSE costituirà la costruttiva conclusione del Congresso. Dopo di ciò, si terrà l’ Assemblea dell’AIR per il bilancio e la riprogrammazione delle attività di competenza. A commento di sintesi, il Congresso si pone come un’importante occasione per una divulgazione delle ricerche translazionali e assistenziali e per l’avanzamento delle modalità operative, proiettate verso una presa in carico moderna, efficace ed aperta al futuro delle nostre bambine. Abstracts received by fax will not be considered: should you have any problems with the online submission, please, contact the Organizing Secretariat AIM Group – AIM Congress (airett.2009@aimgroup.it). The presenting author of an accepted abstract must register and attend the Congress. Acknowledgement of receipt of the submission will be sent to the e-mail address stated under section “Personal details”. The corresponding author will receive within May 15th all the correspondence concerning the abstract and is responsible for informing the other authors of the status of the abstract. Works based on the scientific program are preferable, but every work about neurological or genetic theme should be accepted. Upon submission, please indicate your preferred presentation form (oral or poster) category that best describes the abstract: Basic research Ostheoporosis Clinical genetics Neurological aspects Mouse Models Miscellanea The Scientific Committee can change the category from oral to poster and viceversa. Abstracts must be written in English The complete abstract must not exceed 2.500 characters including spaces (approx. 250 words). All abbreviations must be defined the first time they appear in the text, before being used as an abbreviation only. Structured abstracts are mandatory. The abstracts should state clearly the Purpose, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Abstracts should be informative and not just promise further investigation. Tutte le abbreviazioni dovranno essere definite la prima volta che appaiono nel testo prima di essere utilizzate come abbreviazioni. È obbligatorio suddividere il lavoro secondo una struttura articolata come segue: Purpose (intento), Methods (metodi), Results (risultati) and Conclusions (conclusioni). To avoid compatibility problems between Speakers computer and hall projector and to speed up the presentation there will be no personal connection in the hall. Cancellation policy

Notification of cancellation must be sent in writing to AIM Group- AIM Congress.

Cancellations will be accepted until May 11th, 2009 with a refund of all prepaid fees except for a 30% administration charge.

No refunds will be made for cancellations received after this date.

All approved refunds will be processed and issued within 60 days after the congress.

Politica di ancellazione

La notifica di cancellazione deve essere inviata ad AIM Group- AIM Congress. Le cancellazioni saranno accettate fino all’ 11 maggio 2009 con rimborso di tutte le quote prepagate, ad eccezione di un 30%relativo alle tasse di gestione pratica.

Nessun rimborso sarà invece effettuato dopo la suddetta data.

Tutti i rimborsi approvati saranno processati ed emessi entro 60 giorni dal termine del congresso.

Linate International Airport

Take bus n° 73 from “International Arrivals”, get off to the stop “Larga-Verziere” and walk for about 300 meters.

Malpensa Airport

The railway service “MALPENSA EXPRESS” connects the Airport to the city center in 40 minutes and the terminus is in front of “Cadorna” station. Once there, take tram n¡ 27, get off to the stop “Albricci-Larga” and walk for about 300 meters. Alternatively, take metro MM1 red line, get off to the stop “Duomo” and walk for 5 minutes.

Orio al Serio Airport

The bus services “AUTOSTRADALE” and “AIR PULLMAN” directly connect the Airport to the city in 60 minutes and the terminus is the Central Station: once there take metro MM3 yellow line and get off to the stop “Missori”. Coming out from the metro, you just walk for about 450 meters.

By train
